1st Due House Fire - 201 Orangeburg Road

Posted on June 19, 2011

MVAAt approximately 8pm on the evening of June 19th, 2011 (Father's Day), the OTFD was dispatched to 201 Orangeburg Road for a report of a house on fire. Deputy Chief Jung (651) arrived on location shortly after the PD to find a 1 story wood frame single family with a grill fire extending to the structure. Heavy smoke and fire were visible from the street as the gas fed fire began to spread into the attic space above the attached garage. 651, sensing the urgency of the situation, immediately requested the full first alarm assignment, bringing a RIT Team from Norwood and EMS to the scene. Engine 64, led by Lt. Reilly, arrived on location a short time later and took the plug right in front of the house to establish their water supply. Firefighters Naylis and Marchesini grabbed the number 1 crosslay and made their way up the driveway towards the structure. An aggressive attack was made on the Charlie side, bringing the bulk of the fire in check within a matter of minutes. Lines were subsequently repositioned to the interior attic space as well as the garage area as the crew from 63 Truck began opening up for the engine. Mutual aid companies laddered the roof and performed vertical ventilation of the involved portions of the attic. The fire was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes. FD units made a good stop on the fire and kept smoke and fire damage in the living areas of the house to a minimum. Other mutual aid companies on scene included a ladder from Harrington Park and an engine and rescue from River Vale. Units operated on scene for approximately 3 hours.

Mutual Aid To Norwood For RIT

Posted on June 9, 2011

NorwoodIn the storming evening hours of Thursday, June 9th the OTFD was requested on the mutual aid assignment for a RIT team to respond to a working fire in Norwood. The fire building was a 2 1/2 story wood frame, single family dwelling, with fire located in the enclosed attic space. It's believed that the fire started as a result of a lightening strike to the house. Norwood's Chief 351 arrived on scene first to find a heavy smoke condition emanating from the second floor and the attic. Engine 361 arrived as the first due engine and successfully contained the fire to the location of origin using 1 high pressure line and 1 additional attack line. A full second alarm assignment was requested for this fire, bringing units from Norwood, Northvale, Closter, Harrington Park, and Old Tappan. EMS was provided by Norwood and Demarest. Old Tappan's Rescue 61 remained on location throughout the incident providing equipment and a RIT Team for the crews operating on scene.

Animal Rescue

Posted on May 30, 2011

In the evening hours of Memorial Day 2011, the OTFD was requested to respond to Stone Point Park for the animal rescue; no further information had been provided at the time of dispatch.  Deputy Chief Jung (651) arrived on location a short time later to find a small dog stuck between the slats of an aluminum fence.  The animal was found to be uninjured and was being actively comforted by his owners.  DC Jung requested Rescue 61 to the scene, responding with 6 volunteers.  Rescue 61 arrived on location a short time later and went to work removing the animal from the fence using the departments Porta Power hand-operated hydraulic spreaders.  In just seconds, the fence slats were deflected just enough to allow rescuers to carefully slide the dog out without injury.  Units operated on scene for less than 10 minutes and returned to quarters a short time later.

MVAOn the afternoon of Thursday May 26th, Old Tappan fire units responded to a reported fire in a pool heating appliance.  Units arrived on scene a short time later to find the same.  A single 1 3/4" handline was stretched off Engine 64 to extinguish the remaining fire.  Units cleared the scene after operating for a short period of time.

DrillOn Sunday, May 15th OTFD members participated in in a mutual aid drill with various agencies from surrounding towns. Old Tappan Ladder 63 responded to the scene as an additional truck company and positioned on the Alpha side of the building. The chauffeur laddered the roof of the 3-story structure and the crew proceeded to the roof to "open up" and check for extension. Rescue 61 also responded on the mock-Second Alarm to act as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Rescue 61's crew stood by until activated to respond to a simulated "Mayday" call for assistance. The RIT firefighters reported to the 3rd floor to locate a firefighter reporting a low air alarm. Both crew operated at the drill for approximately 2 hours before being released from the scene.

NJ Highway Traffic Safety Class

Posted on February 21, 2011

On Monday, February 21st, OTFD members attended a mandatory training course held at the headquarters of the Hillsdale Fire Department.  The required course on highway traffic safety is mandated by the state to ensure safe, uniform operations by emergency responders dispatched to incidents on New Jerseys' limited access highways.  The course and the operational guidelines were formulated in June 2010 based upon nationally recognized practices and procedures with additional input from various state and local agencies.  Some of the topics covered in the course include guidelines for safe vehicle positioning, general safety for on-scene operations, as well as identifying the need to maintain mobility of the motoring public.  Additionally, the course stressed the need for all emergency responders to understand and appreciate the special hazards and high risk that personnel are exposed to when operating at a highway incident with motor vehicle traffic in close proximity.  These hazards can include high vehicle speeds, adverse weather conditions, heavy trucks, and exposure to motorists with varying degrees of ability, with possible vision, alcohol, and drug impairment.

Additional courses will be available at neighboring departments in the near future for those members unable to attend.

Ice Rescue Drill W/ Harrington Park FD

Posted on February 18, 2011

On the evening of Thursday, February 17th, several department members were asked to participate in an ice rescue drill and demonstration in Harrington Park.  Although used rather infrequently, the ice rescue sled is a valuable and necessary tool for the Fire Department to have at the ready.  Due to this limited frequency of usage, it is ever more important that the Department members take advantage of such training activities when conducted in an almost real-life environment.

Closter, NJ - 2nd Alarm Fire

Posted on January 6, 2011

Closter, NJ 2nd Alarm StandbyIn the late afternoon hours of January 6th, 2011, the Closter Fire Department and numerous mutual aid agencies from the surrounding communities responded to 449 Ruckman Road for a 2nd Alarm fire.  Due to all hands working, Old Tappan Ladder 63, along with an engine from neighboring Harrington Park, was requested to standby at the Closter Fire Department headquarters to cover the Borough.  The standby companies took in one assignment while in Closter, responding for the activated fire alarm and reported smoke condition at the Dunkin Donuts on Hardenburgh Avenue in Demarest.  With no services needed at the Dunkin Donuts, companies cleared the scene and were subsequently released from their standby assignment a short time later.
